Teacher Diversity: Waterbury Public Schools Has Lost Its Last Three Pairs of Personnel Directors and Talent Management Supervisors

What is happening with the Waterbury Public Schools’ personnel and talent management department? Over the last four years, there have been three different pairs of personnel directors/talent management supervisors. Currently, no one occupies either position as the district maneuvers itself into the most critical hiring time of the year. We are concerned. We all should be very concerned. A string of bad luck or is it bad hires. It doesn’t matter at this point. We want Superintendent Ruffin and the BOE to democratize this process as much as possible. This means leveraging experts in the community, parents, and students to be on the search team as well as the interview team. Any other choice is irresponsible because their enclave decision-making process has produced the situation we are in now.

As we continue with our Teacher Diversity Campaign monthly meetings we invite all the school officials and educators who want to be involved to join us as we strategize on:

How much should be budgeted for teacher diversity efforts…

How to eliminate bias in the recruitment and interviewing process…

What partnerships will increase the likelihood of hiring more diverse educators…

Creating hiring committees to pursue a new director of personnel and supervisor of talent management…
