Year After Year, Plan After Plan: Racial Gaps Grow for Waterbury’s Black and Hispanic Students…

“As an organization, we have been tracking achievement and performance gaps along the lines of race and ethnicity since 2015. Sadly the widening of the gap between white students and Black and Hispanic students doesn’t surprise us. The Board of Education has done a poor job as the oversight body of our education system. Too many have been on the board for too long and have long resisted the public’s urging to take bold measures on a host of issues. While educators and district leaders have large amounts of culpability, as they should, the board has become a sterile body with no vision, no willingness to partner with the community, and certainly not courageous enough to stand up against unresponsive solutions proposed to them by Waterbury’s staff.”
